Murals are more popular than ever—and for good reason. Bold, large-scale artwork in vibrant colors have the power to stop people in their tracks and leave a lasting impression. A well-crafted mural can create a buzz around your business, drawing in visitors who might not have otherwise stopped by. It becomes a local landmark, a colorful backdrop perfect for social media-worthy photos. And when those photos get shared online, your mural is essentially serving as free marketing for your business! Inside your space, a striking mural can set the tone and reinforce your brand, making a powerful visual statement that resonates with your customers.

But where do you begin?

How do I hire a mural artist? When I receive an inquiry from a potential client interested in a mural, the most common thing they say is, “I have no idea how this works.” If this sounds like you, don’t worry—this blog post is here to help! Below, you’ll find a step-by-step overview of what to expect when hiring a mural artist:

One of the first things I'll need from you are photos and dimensions of the space you’d like painted. Specifically, I’ll ask for a full shot of the wall and surrounding area, as well as a close-up to assess the wall’s texture. Why is this important? The texture of the surface and any potential obstacles in the area can impact how much time and effort the mural will take to complete. Since I typically won't see the site in person until I arrive to paint, these photos help me determine if any special materials or supplies are required for your project.

The base price for a mural is generally calculated by square footage, so the dimensions of the space are essential in providing you with an accurate price estimate.

Before our initial consultation, it’s helpful to gather images of murals or artwork that inspire you—whether from Google, Pinterest, or elsewhere. These photos will give me a clearer sense of the style you're envisioning and will guide me in creating a design that aligns with your vision. Keep in mind, the final cost per square foot will depend on several factors, including the complexity and style of the mural design.

Once we’ve discussed your vision and you’ve shared inspiration photos along with the dimensions and photos of the space, I can provide you with an approximate price range for your project. Most custom murals fall within the $20-$45 per square foot range.

What comes next?

Once I receive your paid design fee, I will begin working on your initial concept. The standard design fee is $500*,  which includes up to two revisions of a single design. Additional revisions will be billed at a rate of $100 per revision. If you request more than one design concept, each will be billed separately.

Please note that the design fee is non-refundable, but is often credited toward the total cost of the mural**.

*The design fee may be higher for particularly complex or intricate designs.

**For very complex designs, the design fee may not be applied to the mural’s total cost.

We have a finalized design, now what?

Once we have finalized the design for your mural, I will send you my standard contract for commissioned artwork.  This contract will outline all of the details of your mural, including the agreed upon design and the total price of the artwork.  The price of the artwork includes materials and labor, but does not include any special equipment such as lifts or extensive scaffolding, that may be required to safely execute the project. These additional charges will be outlined in the contract as well.

Upon receiving the signed agreement and 50% deposit, we will set a date to begin on site work.  The remaining balance is due immediately upon completion of the work.

How much notice do you need?

I generally schedule projects 2-3 months in advance. Requests with shorter notice may be subject to a rush fee.
